Mecklenburg Medical Group patients depend upon an
internist as their primary care provider to handle all aspects of
their health - medical, social and psychological. Our patients utilize Mecklenburg Medical
Group internists for their most routine medical needs such as physicals, health
screenings and treatment of minor illness. Internists understand each
patient's unique medical history and know how to detect subtle changes in
their patient's health throughout life. If health complications should occur,
your internist can refer you to another specialist within Mecklenburg Medical Group
whose expertise range from cardiology to oncology to dermatology.
Sub-Specialty Services
Cardiology/Cardiovascular Disease- Guided by a patient's symptoms such as shortness of
breath, chest pain or irregular heart rhythm, our cardiologists have a
variety of tools available to identify the cause of heart-related conditions. In
2002, Mecklenburg Medical Group established a dedicated facility for cardiovascular
testing and vascular assessments utilizing state-of-the-art equipment staffed by
board-certified cardiologists and cardiovascular technicians. Our cardiologists
are able to provide a full range of diagnostic and vascular assessments for our
patients.
Gastroenterology - Gastroenterologists are medical specialists with extensive
training in diseases of the digestive tract. Our specialists focus on the
prevention of colon cancer, screening for polyps with colonoscopies, as well as
the evaluation and management of gastrointestinal and liver disease. In
addition, swallowing disorders, ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),
gallstones, constipation, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and
irritable bowel syndrome are conditions that our specialists are trained to
diagnose and treat.
Oncology/Hematology - An oncologist is an expert in knowing what tests are needed to
determine the type, location, and extent of a patient's cancer. Once a diagnosis is
determined, the treatment best suited for the type of cancer found will be
recommended. Treatments can include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Cancer
therapy is continually changing with many new anticancer drugs and treatments
to provide the best outcomes for our patients. Our hematologists specialize in
diseases of the blood, often relating to cancer. Through Mecklenburg Medical Group
clinics, our hematologists also participate in hematology studies to further
advance treatments of such conditions.
Pulmonology - Helping patients with breathing disorders maximize function and
improve quality of life is the goal of our pulmonologists. Patients include
those with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer
and other lung conditions.
Endocrinology - An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor who diagnoses diseases
that affect your glands, which are organs that produce hormones. They
are trained to recognize and uncover hormone problems to help restore the
natural balance of hormones in your system. Mecklenburg Medical Group endocrinologists are
specialists who work with patients diagnosed with conditions such as diabetes,
osteoporosis, menopause, pancreatic and adrenal gland disorders, and thyroid
disease - all conditions that are caused by hormone imbalances.
Rheumatology - Our rheumatologists work with patients with arthritis, certain
autoimmune diseases including lupus, musculoskeletal pain disorders, tendonitis,
osteoporosis and gout. A rheumatologist is an internist with experience in the
diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles
and bones. Many types of rheumatic diseases are not easily identified in the
early stages. Rheumatologists are specially trained to discover the cause of a
patient's swelling and pain and then work closely with patients to design an
individualized treatment program.
Dermatology - Our dermatologists evaluate and treat patients with skin
conditions. They are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers,
melanomas, moles, and other tumors of the skin, the management of contact
dermatitis and other inflammatory skin disorders including rosacea, as well as
offering treatments for cosmetic concerns including aging and hair loss.
Infectious Disease- Mecklenburg Medical Group offers the expertise of board-certified infectious
disease specialists whose work includes treatment of post-operative
complications such as pneumonia, urinary tract and wound infections. These
specialists can provide insight into tests that will be helpful in diagnosing
and understanding the infection and preventing recurrent infections. Infectious
disease specialists focus on all kinds of infections, including those caused by
bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Our physicians also specialize in
treating patients with infections due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the
cause of AIDS.
Sleep Medicine - Our sleep specialists offer help to those suffering from
various sleep disorders including sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome,
narcolepsy and other sleep-related conditions. Each patient will be evaluated to
determine the cause of their sleep-related disorder by analyzing their
physiological functions during sleep.
